OC Nervous :P

Hey so I'm new to the website and I'm living over in Utah. My family is coming over from communist California (joke from our CCW trainer) and they're wanting to spend about 5 days over in Nevada, Las Vegas area. I don't think we'll actually spend any time over in LV, but more around that area, i.e. the parks, trails, you know, tourist stuff. So I've been looking around the forum and I see a real mix on OC in Nevada. I've read up on the laws so that's not what I'm concerned about, it's more about the public's reaction. I see a lot of people who don't have issues, and then here and there people having issues with others looking at it, making comments, etc. Since I live in Utah, I conceal carry and that's what I prefer (I didn't have a good Open Carry holster at the time anyways, now I do though) so I'm not used to people making comments about my firearm as they can't see it. I don't to be embarrassed if someone tells me to leave their store or restaurant to disarm. I'll be looking carefully for those signs on the windows though.

Also what makes me nervous is I googled OC in Las Vegas and one link was from the 1911 forums and someone asked something similar to what I was looking for, and a ton of people were practically saying NO, do NOT open carry there or else you'll be getting a lot of visits from metro and whatnot. Again, I don't think my parents want to visit the hell hole of Las Vegas but that whole thread in the 1911 forums made me nervous as hell. I'm sure I'll calm down tomorrow once my head settles and I'll go about my normal business with my firearm, but I'm going to hope they don't want to go into downtown vegas lol But this forum has been giving me hope and has calmed me down and given me a breather knowing there are quite a few people who open carry in this state.

ANYWAYS, I'm headed that way this morning (it's 1am now) and I just wanted to send this out before I headed there, and then give you an update on how it went, because I see that people kind of like knowing how it went.

Welcome to our home and hearth - we work to normalize OC as we go about our everyday lives.

Think you will find that the horror stories are most exaggerated and made by those that would prefer "surprising" bad guys, rather than preventing the incident. You are experiencing typical newbie feelings - having relatives visit you at the beginning of your experience journey doesn't make it any easier.

Those who have been there before you have paved the way - LEOs and LEAs are quite aware of the legality of OC in Nevada. After the sun comes up, some locals will undoubtedly add their thoughts.

Welcome to the forums! I've carried everywhere I could in Vegas except in the casinos (not illegal but they will ask you to leave). If you carry with confidence and dress reasonably either nobody will pay attention or you'll be getting high fives and compliments. Don't worry about the LE--that's old news. If you want to build up your confidence first, try OC'ing while pumping gas at busy gas stations first. Then try going inside. After that, you'll quickly realize that folks simply do not care that you're carrying.

Welcome to OCDO.

The number of people who are actively looking for someone OCing so they can go ballistic is exceedingly small. The worst you might have to deal with when confronted by one of them is controlling yourself so you do not fall down laughing. Just think - there is some spittle-spewing loose cannon making both veiled and direct threats towards an obviously armed individual. In the words of that imminent philosopher Bugs Bunny, "What a maroon!"

But on an opposite note - if your OCing does cause the horses to faint, the women to stampede, and the gutters to overflow with blood please send us all the details of how the wet dream of the antis came to be. Pictures will be appreciated.

stay safe.

It is legal to carry in the casinos but they can and probably will ask you to leave. I CC in the casinos when I visit Vegas

Not trying to be a smart aleck because being from Michigan I am not familiar with Nevada law.

Aren't Casinos private property and not a "public building"?

Heya Bikenut.

Yeah, casinos are private property and make up any rules they so desire as well as post all the signage they want, but carrying onto/into their buildings is not illegal and signs carry no weight of law. The caveat is that if asked by an employee to leave, you must do so or face a trespassing charge.

Only the casinos are really going to care. Seriously, pretty much everywhere else in the state, even the public areas of Fremont St. and the sidewalks of the Strip, you won't have a problem.

If you avoid the tourist traps, OC here will be a non-event.

And I have enough legal-type stuff to make you go blind at NevadaCarry.org

Go to GarandGuy's website.

I've been OC'ing in the Las Vegas area for 23 years. I might know a thing or two about it. I can count on one finger the times I've been denied service, and I received an apology from the corporate office for their rogue bartender that was violating corporate policy.

It sounds like most of your "don't do it" opinions are from people that don't do it, and almost assuredly for reasons other than they honestly think they will have issues.

Restaurants to avoid are a short list, but include Red Robin and Buffalo Wild Wings, and recently added Outback Steakhouse. Most are perfectly happy to have us, including Miller's Alehouse, BJ's Brewhouse, PT's Pub, Landry's, and Twin Peaks (Henderson).

They are private but they do not post no weapons signs.

Actually, many of them do. Regardless, our signs have no weight of law unless on a government building.

Boyd Properties, which are a good number of the hotels, have a very large sign with very important words like "Homeland Security." I laugh.

Is that a recent phenomenon? I honestly can't recall seeing one sign...but then it's been over a year since I was last there. :(

No, you just missed them at what places might have them. Boyd Properties have been prominently posted for a long time. Those include: Sam's Town, Main Street Station, The Orleans, The California, Gold Coast, Suncoast, and Fremont.

Most places don't bother with dumb signs, though, like you observed.

I was there in July and I never seen a single sign. I went up and down the strip and Fremont street. I even went on Tod Bridges lovers and losers game show while carrying on stage.

I don't doubt you. I've confirmed there are many places that have no signs. I'm also saying that are many places that do.

Were you openly carrying on the game show?

Regardless, we are all agreed that any signs have no weight of law, in addition to no weight with bad guys.

Pointy end and slightly to the left
Signs are not required in NV for private business to have a no gun policy. I have open carried for over 10 years with never an issue with Metro. The stories of Metro giving you a hard time happened occasionally several years ago however there was a formal complaint from a member here some years back and Metro retrained over 3000 officers and since I have only heard of a few run ins with Metro since non that I have heard about in the last five years even though the OC movement has grown leaps and bounds. I have OC across Utah on a motorcycle, cross I 15 and I 70 OCing into the restaurants and gas stations never an issue. The ones that post the negatives of OCing almost have never OCed everyday as most that post here. Their data is base on opinions with no real life experience, unfounded, bogus, and untested data. Who has the best idea of what happens while OCing. Hundreds of poster here and on Southern Nevada open carry face book page that OC every day or someone the posts and says they never OC because of bogus second hand unfounded BS data? Maybe a wasted post as I now see the OP is traveling.
