Anyone tried open carry in the police stations since the State Preemption law was changed to give it more teeth? I have not been there since, but just saw a live newscast out front of Metro HQ and the "no weapons" sign is still being displayed on the front doors. ?????
Not a direct visit to a 'cop shop' recently, but an interaction via FB messenger with Community Relations of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office.
My message:
In light of Sheriff Allen's comments on RGJ.com 6/21/16 regarding "Question 1", when can I expect the WCSO to remove the "No Firearms Allowed in Building" sign near the front doors of your building? He said, "I am equally committed to protecting your rights and freedoms as citizens of Nevada and the United States." Is NRS 202.3673(3)(b) not a valid law to Sheriff Allen in regard to rights under the Constitution of the State of Nevada? Maybe SB175 is not valid to Sheriff Allen. Section 8, NRS 244.364 gives the LEGISLATURE "EXCLUSIVE DOMAIN" in setting regulations regarding firearms, and "....any other law, regulation, rule or ordinance to the contrary is null and void."
NRS 244.365 goes on to say "and any such ordinance or regulation that is posted within the county must be
removed."
All of that seems very clear to me. It is my expectation that actions will immediately be taken to remove the offending signage.
Please pass this message to all appropriate offices. I will also be contacting the Office of Professional Integrity directly regarding this matter.
The most recent response from that office: (I'm willing to post all previous and future correspondence if you're interested)
"Facebook is a limited public forum and designed to communicate with the public by answering general questions, notifying the public about any safety concerns, and providing outreach information. Through our social media, all we can do is point you to NRS code 202.3673 where the places you can and cannot carry firearms are specified. Those laws are passed by the Nevada Legislature and we do not control them. If you have an issue with the Nevada Revised Statute, we would invite you to contact the Legislature directly. If you feel the Sheriff's Office is not in compliance with NRS, you are welcome to open a case with the Office of Professional Integrity and they will investigate your inquiry."
In my opinion, they seem to be willing to force a lawsuit in order for any real action to be taken.
I do plan to directly contact the Legislature and make them aware of WCSO responses.
