There is a new forum rule governing avatars

(21) ACCEPTABLE AVATARS: We are willing to allow almost any avatar. However, there are several exceptions. Prohibited avatars include those which show unsafe firearms handling, are pornographic, or which violate other forum rules such as bashing other gun rights groups, expressing hate, or LEO bashing.

Why would somebody bash a Gun Right Group?

I had an avatar with a kid pointing a gun at his face (humorous) ... and beget the rule.

But really, no avatars of the following: Rose O'Donnell, Roseanne Barr, etc would be highly offensive as they might cause people to need to take t trip to the bathroom ....

Oh, jeez. Another rule.

Rather than make a rule against objectionable avatars, just treat the avatar as part of the post, which then falls under the rule, "we reserve the right to edit or delete anything for any reason..."

I really, really hate the gun-pointed-at-viewer avatar, and thought McBeth's suicide avatar highly degraded; but even so, I think this idea of making up a new rule every few times something comes up to be even worse.

Proposed Rule #20: no more rules.

It was not a suicide avatar .... just an idiot looking down the barrel of a gun ... humorous ... funny .. witty ... classic ... wacky ...

I like rule #20 .... The Dangerfield rule ...

Why would somebody bash a Gun Right Group?

An excellent question. Nevertheless, it has happened on these forums before.

Oh, I might as well admit it: even I bash the NRA at times, but I try not to do it here.

nothing wrong with the rule and it is one i can live well within

I object to avatars of bears hiding their face behind a net as they prepare to perpetrate robbery on hard working bees.

I also object to satanic avatars sporting a Christian halo on Easter; an insult to millions of Christians worldwide celebrating The Resurrection and the triumph of spirit over corporeal existence. Evil, the antithesis of The Nazarene's message, is a sure route to spiritual decay and entrapment. Just because the avatar has a smile does not make it any less the personafication of evil. Juxtaposing it against an infinity symbol representing the unlimited scope of spiritual ability only adds to the insult since committing evil or even harmful acts is directly opposite to message of men like Christ, Bhudda, and Lao Tse.

More rules, please.

The reason I post here is the small number of rules and the efficacy of almost all the rules the owners of this home choose to set. I don't agree with them all, and there are some that would improve the experience if implemented. I've often asked the staff to take actions that they sometimes do and sometimes don't. But, it is their house and their right to do with it as they please. While we don't always agree (an unavoidable state of affairs between rational beings), I respect their approach as a whole and am willing to live with some of their choices that aren't to my liking.

In the case of this new rule, I don't have a problem with it. It actually is just a logical extension of existing rules, more of a clarification than anything else.

If I found that the owners' rules and behavior to be "oppressive" (and my rational requests went unaddressed), then I'd leave, looking for another posting home, or create one of my own.

I choose to stay as a guest in this quite rational home.

Thank you John and Mike.

Great point! I mistook it completely. I thought General Urko was having a mother of all bad hair days while trying to emulate Edward G. Robinson* sucking on a cigar. I was convinced we needed more rules to prevent further insults to:

  • hairstyle fashionistas
  • Charlton Heston, former NRA prez.
  • sincere parents trying to prevent kids smoking

But, your analysis is obviously spot-on. Thank you for the insight!

More rules, please.

Some people would cry if they were going to be hung with a new rope...

I ignore avatars and advertisements... mostly. I do get a kick out of the ugly ape one...

OH, LOOKIE! Wish I could afford the 3 speed holster... OOPS... I looked.
