Good place to take CCW class?

The wife and I are looking into getting CCW's.
I will do mine first.
Any recommendations on where to take the class?
The first one we looked into you qualify first then spend the day in the classroom?
I hear/read different stories about what kind of target qualification is done.
I've heard some use timed, others don't use the same range/round count, what is considered "on target".
How is the 70% calculated?
My understanding is:
Standard Required to Qualify
Untimed.
You must score 70% at the following distances from the target...
3 yards - 6 rounds must hit target
5 yards - 12 rounds must hit target
7 yards - 12 rounds must hit target

We'll be using semi-autos.

Here, we conduct the classroom training first, then go to the range for the live fire portion.

Really, however, it doesn't matter which is conducted first because the live fire qualification is to demonstrate proficiency (it is not designed to be a "how to" course of instruction.) One is to be "proficient" prior to taking the class.

And, by the way, RunninNGunnin, your targets images as posted, are WAY better than enough to simply qualify. One only needs 70% hits on target; there are no scores recorded. Thus, 21 hits on target, out of the required 30 shots, will qualify.

The last time I requalified I fired all 30 rounds from the hip, two handed hold with a revolver. Although not nicely grouped, all but one were on target. My one and only miss landed in the blank area between the "bad guy's" arm and torso.

My fiance and I just signed up for next Saturday at the 702 Range on Dean Martin & Russel. I will let you know how that goes if you don't figure out a place before then.

Since very recently, FL now recognizes NV permits for NV residents.

If you are getting the FL permit for the extra states when you travel, the UT permit does the same thing and is 1/3 the price. But UT certifies its own instructors, unlike FL, so not all instructors can do it. Make sure you factor in the difference in license fees when you factor in total costs when choosing an instructor.

It seems to be quite affordable to apply for as many states as possible.
I purchased the "VIP Membership" at the range, which gave me 2 free classes (which they are allowing me to use for me and my honey's CCW class - normally $70 a pop) and we just pay an extra $10-25 per state. It seems we might be moving to Florida in the next year so getting the FL permit still feels viable. If and when I am a Florida resident, would FL still recognize my NV permit? I don't know that all the instructors at 702 Range are UT certified, but I think they have one there at least most of the time.
Also, isn't it kind of like a "fun" thing to collect every state possible?

Let me know how the class goes. Like to know things like how long (have to adjust scheduling), what's covered in class, written testing and what/how the range qualifying is done.

I've seen a written test (2013?) and it looks pretty basic.

We wil just get the NV CCW permit. We don't travel to many other states except CA.

No, FL is one of the states that only recognizes another state's permit if you are a resident of that state, which is why I currently have a FL permit. They recognized UT, but only for UT residents. And at the time, they did not recognize NV. Now that they do, I will not need to renew one of the few permits in the country that is more expensive than NV's.

Please be aware that there is no need to pay extra to the range for the training required by Florida. Florida accepts a copy of the training certificate that you will receive for Nevada (or Utah, or any training at all). Utah does not.

So, for Florida you need only get their application which they will send you and then have Metro do an extra set of prints. No special training is needed.

Absolutely everybody was impressed and loved taking the course. It even led to some really fun discussions about concealed/open carry legalities weeks and months later with my family. He is super knowledgeable and I would arrange for another private renewal course if/when the time comes.

Yes, Mac, he knows Nevada grew up in Las Vegas. Superb, accurate and knowledgeable CCW instructor. As an OCer and CCW he knows and keeps up with the entrenched details of both CCW and open carry laws. Proven on many past postings open carry laws dos and don’ts is a weak point for most CCW instructors. I worked with his dad many years ago, now for the most important info, he comes from good stock.

As a suggestion, if you are former military and have a DD-214 with honorable discharge, you may want to consider Arizona although they do not require a CCW to conceal carry.

You download app from their website and send certified copy of DD-214, your app and (2) copies of fingerprint cards and check and you get a NON resident CCW. There NON resident is recognized by 43 states. But the caveat is that CO, FL,MI,NH.ME,PA and SC say they accept resident but not NON resident.

So that takes you back to 35 states. ME,AZ,AK,KS,MS,VT,WV allows anyone who is NOT forbidden to possess a firearm to conceal carry while in the state. That gives you back to 42 states you can CCW with an AZ NON resident CCW.

IANAL so make sure you check each state for CURRENT regulations. Also I went to a place in Las Vegas that did digital scan fingerprint cards.

Thanks Mac. Yes the math was off. Should be 33. When you subtract the 12 states that DO NOT honor ANY AZ CCW you are left with 38 that includes the states that allow CCW without permit. Subtract (5) CO,FL,MI,NH and SC that don't honor the NON resident AZ CCW and you come up with 33 states you can CCW with their NON resident CCW.

That being said it is a good way to get a wide ranging CCW for $60. Also for non vets, they accept just about every state sanctioned CCW class that includes live fire quals

Although it "appears" that for NV residents the NV/UT is probably better because you get the reciprocal states, non permit CCW states and you pick up 3 of the 6 states that require resident CCWs.

702 Range CCW Class

Awesome, awesome, awesome. Instructors were Sarge and Steph. Wife and I got Nevada, Florida and Utah CCW. $100 each. Totally worth it. Taught drawing from the holster, shooting while moving backwards, shooting from the hip and proper draw and holster techniques. Steph took extra time and care of my wife who has less than 4 months experience with firearms. She was extremely anxious about the whole thing, but she was very comfortable and pleased with the Range 702. Instructors are active in educating non-Law Enforcement, Law Enforcement and private security (casinos, etc).

Edit: Highly recommend doing this with the Wife at the same time. There was another couple other than me in the class as well. Very couple friendly.
