Will be visiting Cherokee and was wondering what the law was concerning the Indian reservation. I presume the casino is a prohibited zone similar to Michigan but I am not sure if the confines of the reservation is also. anyone know? I appreciate it if someone can help me out here.

Every bit of "Indian land" I know of in the US prohibits carry of firearms, and does not recognize state-issued permits. I don't know for a fact, but I would assume Cherokee is the same here in NC. Having never been there, and not looked it up, I don't know though...

In fact, I son't even know where to look to find their codes...

OK, my first assumption was no. But I have talked to folks that got the green light to CC from the police. I tried to call the PD and never could get anywhere. Took 2 days for someone to answer the phone. Left a message and never got a call back. So I'm officially at "I have no idea but would love to know."

It appears very vague with regards to carry. It states that you shall not:

Carry a loaded firearm in a vehicle on a public road without lawful authority to do so; or to discharge any kind of firearm from a motor vehicle without lawful authority to do so; or to discharge a firearm from, upon or across any public highway without lawful authority to do so.

But it does not say anything about concealed carry, recognizing NC or other states' permits, nor does it say anything about general carry, transport, or OC.

I have seen on other Forums (GlockTalk) that it has been verified with the Tribal Police that they follow NC law, and recognize NC permits, but I have not verified this myself.

Perhaps this one warrants a phone call to the Cherokee Tribal Police, if I can get to it this week...

Sorry to have made anyones life any harder than it need be with this. I think this is something that not alot of people consider weather or not the rules change on tribal lands......... no matter what state your in. would be good to know for certain though.

FWIW I was in SW NC probably 10 years ago having been hiking and fishing some remote areas in the Mountains for previous several days. I decided to stop in Cherokee to catch some dinner trout on my way to a friends house for a couple of days in Sylva. I purchased a fishing license and went fishing after leaving my Glock in my Console of my truck not being sure of the same. I came back to my SUV a couple of hours later and had the rear hatch open putting fish in my cooler when the Tribal Game warden pulled up. After he approached I informed of my CC Permit and the fact that I did have a firearm in my vehicle. He was only interested in seeing my fishing license and glanced in my cooler to see I had only 4 or 5 fish but no more hidden and told me good luck getting the rest of my limit. Never batted an eye or asked to see my CC permit. MAY have been lucky or something but he didnt seem at all concerned. I have not returned to Cherokee since then but I will be going up there much more in the near future.

Looked up the web site of cherokee and there is no place to submit a question like this. It would be nice and maybe create a job for someone and reduce some work load for Arleen (?) in the office who seems to be too busy to answer the phone. I have tried to call a few times now and as someone stated before on here good luck getting them to answer. so it seems to be true. should I manage to get through to them I will post what I find out.

I lived in the area, and worked in Cherokee. Not getting an answer at the PD is somehow unsurprising to me. YOu might try Jackson County Sheriffs dept. The portion of the reservation that the casino sits on is in Jackson County. Maybe they have some insight/contact that would help. Part is also in Swain County, so maybe their Sheriffs Dept could help. I would imagine that one of those counties is involved in dispatching/mutual aid for the reservation.
